Lagos Residents urge Agency to keep state clean

Refuse waiting Clearing van

This sight is common in some parts of Lagos. This morning in Igando, Lagos, a small crowd in frenzy talk almost grew into a protest.

Many said they pay regularly to the utility agency, LAWMA, who controls the companies that pick up refuse. But they wouldn't find them to pick up the things. In some cases, refuse would begin to spill over the fence before they are taken up.

In the past, it was the government that encouraged residents to keep the state or country clean. Now that residents have learned to imbibe the culture of cleanliness, the government is not found to do its part.

Most of the time though, the government points it out of themselves to the agency. True, any residence of Lagos up till 2006 knew how dirty the state used to be. Residents pay truck pushers to take their garbage. It was expensive too. Even though the environmental agencies force people to dispose their refuse to make environments safe for living, they often spilled on the streets before the task force would come to chase the people to carry out their civil duty. But since the introduction of LAWMA by the state government, things have since changed cosiderably.

Is the government to blame for this?

in Ejo Bus stop, Igando

Since the time of Babatunde  Fashola as governorof the state, refuse disposal is better and more affordable to the Lagos residents.

In recent times it appears that the waters of the fall want to start flowing back to the hill. The residents, rather reminding the government to keep the state clean. They do their part, pay to LAWMA.

Iyana Ileoba Bus stop, is just the next stop from Ejo, about 120 ft apart

The government needs to look inward and find where the problem lies. They should seek to sustain this good initiative to keep the state clean. Lagos government should remember that a number of states took ofter them in this matter. If they let down their guard, the state would lose something very valuable before they realise the importance.

Throughout the country, various traders have association, small or large. They run micro savings for members. They render social assistance to members who might be disadvantaged. And they for solidarity in fighting legal battles. They also have areas of weakness. Because the government of the country has not created trade environment in proper legal framework, some of these associations go beyond their boundaries at time. In some cases, they try to stop others from doing the same business in certain locality if they are not registered with them even though these others are registered with the ...
