FOUR YEARS OF DEMOCRACY
Every new government has four years of a democratic term to rule the people for the record. But how this time is aloted between the government and the governed is so ridiculous that it will take only the American Political Correctness to make it fair at the ratio of 1 to 15. (3 : 45)
Every new government in Nigeria spends three months to rule the people. During this period the government tells the people: "We know that you are there. We have a lot of good stuff in the pipeline for you." Then, they make a lot of good promises. Their presence fade from the people's lives like shadow, by the end of the three months. Then, you wonder what happens for the rest of the three years and nine months that follows.
Beginning of politics. Second term preparations. Big shots. Heads rolling. Cross-carpetting. For the remainder three years and nine months, the government is incapable of remembering that people are still there. That there is hunger. That unfunded hospitals have become deathtraps. That pupils are not having the promised one meal at school. That Leaders Of Tomorrow are not allowed to participate in the vital processes of their nation's growth. That there is insecurities. That schools are breeding perverts. Thus, they deface the picture painted of the labour of the past heroes.
While many today still nurture some bitter pride of the nation, they wail over this rotten luck of Africa, the cradle of civilization that is sadly no longer able to play their political roles. They are also ashamed that Nigeria, the giant of Africa has also become the African headquarter and pioneer of corruption.
In my opinion, the ordinary citizens of Nigeria with their extra absorbers, are one of the best people in the world. If any is a criminal, the government and the system is to blame. They make corruption and criminality very easy and profitable. If any is "Lazy," in quote, they are only imbibing the Nigerian politicians culture of sharing public funds and the system's policy of "You can make so much money with as little effort as possible.
If the government rises today, to the challenge of personnel example, it is going to find that there is no need to averse the imaginative and theoretical belief that there is something wrong with the Nigerian character.
The French Statesman, Napoleon Bonaparte once said: "If you want people to respect you, make a lot of promises but do not try to fulfill any." Many think probably, this is not going to hold sway for always in Nigeria. What are they saying is the only way to resolve Nigerian problem?
One man said that all the people now inhabiting the land will have to die at the same time so that there is no overlap of this generation with any other one to repopulate it. Do you share his thought?
Another man said that Chief Obafemi Awolowo drafted an alternative history of Nigeria, in one of his books. The draft looked at a time when every Nigerian will have to stand on his ground and fight for himself. Do you think that the time is now?
Still others point to the political dramas of the recent years as pointers to the fact that the political climate of the nation is not going to remain as business as usual. Now, do you think that the days of internal imperialism are numbered?
Well, time will find answers to these questions. But one fact remains. Nigerians are suffering from man-made causes. The custodians and operators of the system must do something. If they keep in the same direction and refuse to do something, something will eventually do them.
